Databend
Databend turns a track into image corruption that follows the music. Drop audio alone for Generative mode (it paints the canvas straight from the track) or stack audio over a clip for Modulate mode (the music distorts the picture). XOR for chaos, brightness pump for clean reactivity, channel shift for RGB earthquake.
How to use Databend
- Drop in an audio file (MP3, WAV, OGG, AAC, FLAC). Tool flips to Generative, bytes paint the canvas immediately.
- Optionally drop in a video on top. Tool flips to Modulate. The audio now corrupts the video instead of painting alone.
- Pick an operation. XOR for chaos, Add for color pump, Pump for clean luma response, Shift for RGB earthquake.
- Tune intensity. 0 leaves the clip clean, 1 hands the picture to the audio entirely.
- Export as MP4, the audio is muxed back in, in sync with what you saw in preview.
Tips
- Generative mode wants tracks with strong dynamics. Drops, builds and percussive hits show up as visible band changes. Steady drones look flat.
- Modulate + XOR around 0.6–0.8 turns any clip into hard glitch. Drop to 0.2 for subtle texture.
- Brightness Pump with bands on, intensity 0.3, is the safer move for clips, the gain rides the mids without trashing the picture.
- Channel Shift with bands maps bass into red, mids into green, treble into blue. Bass-heavy mixes get the most violent reds.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is databending?
- Letting one file pretend to be a different kind of file. Audio read as pixels gives you noise that follows the music. The same idea drives the image corruption here.
- Do I need both audio and video?
- Audio is required, video is optional. Audio alone paints generatively. Add a clip and the music distorts it.
- Why does the brightness pump look smoother than the XOR?
- XOR reacts on every sample. Pump and Channel Shift react on the envelope, which moves slower. Different feel by design.
- What does mu-law compand do?
- Boosts the quiet parts of the track so they still drive visible motion instead of sitting flat.
