Datamosh Transition

A datamosh transition is what happens when the cut between two shots is removed and the first shot is left to bleed into the second. The old picture keeps moving, but it moves along the NEW shot's motion, so it stretches and smears until the incoming scene finally takes over. It is the single most recognisable move in the whole datamosh family, and it needs two clips to exist at all.

How to use Datamosh Transition

Drop clip A, the shot you are cutting FROM.
Add clip B, the shot you are cutting TO. No second clip to hand? Use the sample.
Play it back. The melt happens where the two clips meet.
Tune Melt Strength and Melt Length until the smear lands where you want it.
Export a single MP4 containing both clips and the transition.

Tips

The melt rides the INCOMING clip's motion. If clip B opens on a camera move or a fast subject, the transition is far more dramatic than if it opens static.
Melt Length is in frames, so a 14-frame melt on a 30fps clip lasts about half a second. Match it to the tempo of the track and it lands like an edit rather than an accident.
Two clips of different aspect ratios are letterboxed into the first clip's frame rather than stretched.
No second clip, no transition. With one clip the tool passes it through untouched, which is by design.
