Frequency Modulation
Frequency Modulation is what a magnet does to a working television. The raster bulges and swirls toward the magnet, the colour fails into a rainbow bruise that stays where it was held, and the rest of the picture comes back drawn as lines that bend around every shape in the frame. It is one of the few analogue artefacts that reads as damage to your footage rather than as a filter laid over it.
Tips
- Start from Magnet on the Tube, then move Magnet X and Magnet Y so the bulge lands on a face or a light.
- Push Magnet Twist and Colour Bruise together. Either one alone reads as a generic warp.
- Negative Magnet Pull pushes the picture away from the magnet instead of dragging it in.
- Lower Threshold to keep the shadows drawn, raise it to leave only the bright parts as lines.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What does Frequency Modulation do?
- It makes your clip look like a magnet is being held against a live television: the picture bulges and swirls toward it, the colour bruises into rainbow, and the rest is drawn out of bending lines.
- Can I move the magnet?
- Yes. Magnet X and Magnet Y place it anywhere in the frame, Magnet Size sets how far its pull reaches, and a negative Magnet Pull pushes the picture away instead of dragging it in.
- Can I turn the magnet off and keep the lines?
- Yes. Set Magnet Pull, Magnet Twist and Colour Bruise to zero and you get a clean line drawing of your footage. The Straight Raster preset does exactly that.
- Will it slow my export down?
- It runs as a single GPU pass with no frame history, so preview stays smooth and export keeps pace with the rest of the tools.
