Highlight Crush: Blown-Out Contrast for Video

Highlight Crush (slug: brightness-crush) pushes contrast past the normal limits and adds optical glare to the highlights that survive. The result is a blown-out, dreamy image that reads as overexposed film or a damaged sensor. Open the tool.

What the settings do

Black Crush (default 40). Pixels darker than this value get pulled to black. Low values keep shadow detail. High values swallow detail and produce the silhouette-heavy look.

White Crush (default 220). Pixels brighter than this value get pushed to pure white. Lowering it eats into the midtones and makes the frame blown out.

Contrast (default 1.8). Standard contrast boost applied before the crush. High contrast makes the crush thresholds bite harder.

Gamma (default 1.0). Brightens or darkens the midtones before crush. 0.7 gives a lifted, milky look. 1.4 gives a heavy, dense look.

Haze (default 0.15). Adds a global milky wash. Push it to 0.3 for a hot-day exterior feel, 0.05 for nearly clean output.

Glare shape

The Glare block is what makes the highlights feel optical. Pixels above the glare threshold get bloom applied.

Threshold 0.7 is a safe default. Lower threshold means more of the image blooms, which can easily become too much. Intensity above 0.5 starts to wash out detail.

Three looks worth saving

Sun-beaten day. White crush 190, contrast 2.2, gamma 0.9, glare orb intensity 0.4, haze 0.3. Pair with a teal-orange Cinematic LUT on top.

Night with neon. Black crush 60, white crush 200, contrast 2.5, glare anamorphic intensity 0.6, haze 0.1. Good over city footage with practical lights.

Washed-out memory. Black crush 20, white crush 175, contrast 1.3, gamma 0.75, haze 0.4. Use on interior scenes for a dream-sequence feel.

Keyframe it

Highlight Crush supports keyframes. Ramp glare intensity from 0 to 0.6 across a clip to build intensity, or animate haze up during a reveal. See the keyframe guide.

For AI footage

AI video often renders highlights flat and lifeless. Highlight Crush puts optical weight back into the bright parts of the frame. Keep the intensity modest, the goal is to make the highlights behave like lens highlights, not to wreck the image. More context in the AI video guide.
