Chrome Bleed: Liquid Metal on Any Image

Chrome Bleed is a chrome paint tool. You drag over an image and leave behind streaks of reflective metal that flow under gravity and pick up the environment map. The result reads like mercury or liquid steel poured on top of your photo.

When to use it

Chrome Bleed shines on:

Defaults are strong

The tool ships with a defensible preset: viscosity 0.7, spread 0.3, roughness 0.15, reflectivity 0.85. That combination gives a thick, slow mercury that clings to the image rather than racing across it.

How to make it feel like real metal

The trick is lighting. Metal without an environment to reflect just looks grey. Try these env maps in order:

  1. Studio, neutral. Safe for most images.
  2. Sunset, golden tones across the highlights. Dramatic.
  3. City, sharp white and blue, reads as night reflections.

Each one changes the read of the metal without you touching the image.

Chrome colour versus reflection

Chrome Color tints the base metal. Default is neutral silver (#cccccc). Push it toward warm and the metal reads as brass. Push it cold and it reads as platinum. Small shifts do a lot, change #cccccc to #d8ccbb and you get bronze.

Workflow that consistently produces good output

  1. Upload an image with a clear subject against a simple background.
  2. Let depth estimation run.
  3. Drag the cursor across the subject in slow, continuous strokes. Short drags produce puddles. Long drags produce ribbons.
  4. Do not try to cover the whole image. Partial chrome coverage is the point, the viewer sees both the original and the metal.
  5. Hit record, do one more clean pass, stop, export.
