Video Format Conversion: What It Is, When You Need It, and How to Do It Free

Video conversion is changing a video file from one format to another: MOV becomes MP4, MKV becomes MP4, a clip shrinks for Discord. Where you actually need it

iPhone MOV or HEVC will not upload or play on Windows

iPhones record MOV files using the HEVC (H.265) codec by default. Windows, most Android devices, and many social platforms either refuse them or strip the audio. Converting MOV to MP4 (H.264) makes the file work everywhere. This is the most common conversion people need.

Downloaded MKV will not play on phones, editors, or social platforms

MKV is a container used for downloaded or ripped content. It rarely plays on phones, and most NLEs and social platforms will not accept it. Converting MKV to MP4 gives you the same video in a universally compatible wrapper.

OBS or screen recorder output (WebM) will not import to your editor

OBS and browser-based screen recorders often output WebM. Final Cut, Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and most mobile editors do not import WebM. Converting WebM to MP4 gets it into your timeline.

Clip is too large to upload, email, or post to Discord

Discord caps attachments at 25MB, many email servers at 10-25MB, and some platforms have their own limits. If your clip is too big, compress it by lowering the bitrate, dropping the resolution, or both.

Need a shareable loop or meme

GIFs loop automatically and embed anywhere without a player. Converting a short clip to GIF is the fastest way to share a looping preview or reaction on platforms that do not autoplay video.

Your editor only accepts certain formats

Many editors enforce strict format requirements. MP4 with H.264 is the safest format for compatibility across every NLE, mobile app, and cloud editor. If a file will not import, convert to MP4 first.

Web embedding and smaller file sizes

If you embed video on a website, WebM (VP9 or AV1) delivers roughly half the file size of H.264 MP4 at the same quality. Converting MP4 to WebM is a standard web optimization step.

FAQ

Does converting reduce quality?

Converting from one lossy format to another (for example MOV/HEVC to MP4/H.264) involves re-encoding, which can introduce a small quality loss. At high bitrate settings it is not visible. Starting from original camera footage and exporting at a high bitrate keeps the result sharp.

Why does my MOV file have no audio after converting?

Some HEVC MOV files from iPhones use audio formats that not every converter supports. If audio is missing, try re-recording with Settings > Camera > Formats set to "Most Compatible", or use HandBrake on desktop to transcode with AAC audio.

What is the difference between a container and a codec?

The container (MP4, MOV, MKV) is the file format that holds the video and audio streams. The codec (H.264, H.265, VP9) is the algorithm used to compress the video inside. A file can be MP4 with H.264 or MP4 with H.265. When people say "convert to MP4" they usually mean MP4 with H.264.
