CRT TV: the Old Tube Television Look

The CRT TV effect applies the visual signature of a cathode-ray tube television to your footage: horizontal scanlines, phosphor glow, barrel curvature, and the warm amber-tinted color wash of an 80s set. Drop in a clip and it reads like archival broadcast in one step.

What you get

Footage that looks like it was recorded off a tube television. The scanlines divide the frame into horizontal bands the way a real CRT draws them. Phosphor glow softens the highlights and gives them the characteristic halo of a phosphorescent screen. The barrel curve pulls the corners of the frame inward the way the glass of a curved screen does. The color cast shifts everything toward the warm, slightly desaturated look of an old broadcast monitor.

How to use it

Step 1: Drop in your clip

Open CRT TV and drag your clip onto the canvas. MP4, MOV, and WebM all work. Footage with clean, lit subjects reads best, because the scanlines and glow sit most visibly on mid-toned and bright areas.

Step 2: Set the scanline intensity

The scanline control sets how pronounced the horizontal lines are. At a low setting they are subtle, present without dominating. At a high setting they become the defining texture of the frame, readable even on export. Start around the middle and pull toward your taste.

Step 3: Dial in the phosphor glow

Phosphor glow wraps a soft halo around bright areas of the frame. Low values add a gentle bloom that feels like old screen luminance. Higher values push the look toward overexposed broadcast, where highlights bleed into the surrounding picture.

Step 4: Adjust the curvature

Curvature applies the barrel distortion of a rounded tube screen. At zero the frame is flat. As you increase it, the edges bow inward and the corners pull back, giving the impression that you are looking at footage on a convex glass screen. A small amount goes a long way, and keeping it subtle tends to read more like a real television than a heavy distortion.

Step 5: Pick your color wash

The color wash shifts the overall tint toward the warm amber of period broadcast monitors. Pull it low for a modern retro feel. Push it higher to land on a more committed 80s color grade.

Step 6: Export

Click Export MP4. The file renders at full resolution and audio passes through untouched.

FAQ

What type of footage works best?

Clips with clear subjects against mid-tone backgrounds read the effect most cleanly. Very dark footage can lose the scanline texture; very bright footage can over-expose with high phosphor values. Expose for the scanlines to be legible.

Can I combine it with other effects?

Yes. CRT TV stacks well in the video editor with effects like Datamosh or Night Vision for deeper retro composites. Apply CRT TV last in the stack so the scanlines and curve sit on top of everything else.

Will it slow down the export?

No more than any other single effect. Exports run in the browser and the render time scales with clip length and resolution, not with this effect specifically.
