Fluid Paint: How to Paint With a Photo

Fluid Paint reads a depth map from your image and turns the surface into a reactive fluid. You drag the cursor and the image smears like wet paint, respecting the shapes it came from. The result looks painted, not filtered.

What makes it different

Most liquify tools warp pixels based on cursor position. Fluid Paint runs a physical simulation: viscosity, surface tension, capillary spread, reflectivity. The liquid behaves like liquid. The depth map keeps the paint anchored to the scene so the subject does not turn to soup.

Upload and let depth run

Drop an image onto the canvas. A depth model downloads on first use (~25 MB, cached) and runs in about 5 seconds. You see the depth-coloured preview, then the paint interface.

Good source images: portraits, still life, products, architecture. Anything with a clear subject. Busy textures and overhead shots produce less satisfying results because there is no depth separation for the fluid to ride on.

The three settings that matter

Viscosity (default 0.85) controls how much the fluid resists flowing. At 0.85 you get a thick oil paint. At 0.4 it behaves like water. At 0.95+ the paint barely moves and feels more like clay.

Spread Speed (default 0.18) is how fast the fluid propagates from your cursor. Low values give tight, controllable strokes. High values make every drag fan out across the canvas.

Metal Roughness and Reflectivity together decide whether you are painting with paint or with liquid metal. Roughness 0.05 and reflectivity 0.95 produce the chrome look. Roughness 0.6 and reflectivity 0.3 read as oil.

Three environments to try

The Env Map dropdown swaps the reflection source. Studio is neutral and cinematic. Sunset adds warm amber across the reflective areas. City puts cold architectural highlights into the metal.

If you are working in chrome, the env map does as much work as your cursor.

Depth influence

The Depth Influence slider decides how much the depth map controls the flow. At 1.0 the paint flows downhill across the image geometry like water on a surface. At 0.0 the depth is ignored and paint flows based only on your cursor force.

Keep it at 0.5 for most work. Push it to 0.9 when the subject has strong form (a face, a sculpture) and you want the fluid to pool in hollows.

Export

Hit record, paint for however many seconds you want captured, hit stop. The MP4 downloads at the resolution of the canvas. Keep strokes deliberate, random flailing does not read as intent on playback.

For AI footage

Fluid Paint on an AI-generated still gives you an alt-cut that does not look like a generator. Run the chain: AI still → Fluid Paint → export as MP4 → use as a B-roll cutaway. The painted quality reads as craft even when the source was synthetic. More on that in the AI video guide.
