Ink Bleed: Watercolour on Video and Stills

Ink Bleed simulates wet ink spreading across paper. The paper has texture and capillary structure. The ink has viscosity and surface tension. When you drag, ink settles into paper fibres the way real ink does, with irregular edges, darker pooling, soft fade.

Paper and ink

Start with two decisions. Paper Texture determines the base, rough, smooth, or cold press. Rough paper grabs the ink and creates the broken, organic edges people associate with watercolour. Smooth paper lets ink flow further with cleaner boundaries.

Ink Color defaults to near-black (#1a1a1a). This is the high-contrast calligraphy look. Switch to sepia, deep blue, or burgundy for illustration-style output. Opacity at 0.95 keeps the ink strong; lower it to 0.6 for a washed look.

Capillary strength

This is the setting you will spend the most time on. Capillary Strength (default 0.2) controls how fast the ink wicks into dry paper. At 0.1 you get precise strokes that stay where you put them. At 0.4 the ink runs into the paper and produces the soft halo that makes watercolour feel like watercolour.

Pair low viscosity (0.3) with high capillary strength (0.4) for the dreamy look. Reverse those for sharp calligraphic lines.

A practical technique

  1. Upload a portrait or still life.
  2. Let depth run.
  3. First pass: low opacity (0.4), cover the background with broad strokes. This tints the paper.
  4. Second pass: full opacity, trace the subject outline with deliberate strokes.
  5. Third pass: small dots and dabs to add character in the detail areas.
  6. Record the second and third passes; viewers watch the painting build.

Hand-drawn for AI footage

Ink Bleed on an AI-generated still is one of the fastest ways to launder the generator look. The irregularity of ink on paper is exactly what AI footage lacks. A 30-second sequence of ink building up over an AI portrait produces something that reads as craft.
