Most grades treat the whole frame as one thing. Subject Grade splits it with a soft matte so the person and the background carry different looks. Cool and drain the background while the subject stays warm, or grade only the subject and leave the room alone. It is the difference between a clip that sits flat and one where the eye goes straight to the person.
Grade is the first decision. Use backgroundOnly to pop the subject by working the background alone, subjectOnly to stylise the person and leave the room, or split for two full looks at once. The Subject pop preset drains and cools the background so the subject lifts off it. The Teal orange split preset pushes the subject warm and the background cool for the separation you see across music video.
The matte is the whole game. Turn on Show Matte to see exactly where the split falls, then raise Edge Snap and Edge Repair for a crisp cut, or lift Feather to soften a hard line. Turn Show Matte back off and grade. This effect needs a clear person in the frame: with no subject to hold, the matte has nothing to grab and the split goes arbitrary.
Light first, then separate: run Relight before Subject Grade so the key and the grade agree. Finish with Cinematic LUT over the top. Open the tool: Subject Grade.
