High Contrast Photo Looks

High contrast is about making decisions. What goes black, what goes white, and what survives in between. The Photo Editor has several ways to push tonal range, and they combine well.

Curves and Contrast

Open the Adjustments panel. Curves and Contrast do different things and stack:

• S-Curve steepens the midtone transition. Darks get darker, lights get lighter, but the endpoints stay. This is the clean, editorial contrast look.
• High Contrast (the Contrast dropdown) applies a broader tonal push. Combined with S-Curve, you get a punchy image with strong midtone separation.
• Crushed Shadows curve clips everything below a threshold to black. The image loses shadow detail and gains graphic weight. Faces become masks. Architecture becomes geometry.
• Bright Lift curve does the opposite: pushes everything upward. Combined with Max contrast, you get blown-out highlights with dark shadows. High-fashion editorial territory.

Temperature for Mood

Contrast changes how an image feels, but color temperature changes what it feels like. Warm temperature (+20 to +40) on a high-contrast image gives golden hour harshness. Cool temperature (-20 to -40) gives clinical, blue-shifted shadow tones. Neither is subtle, and that's the point.

Infrared for Extreme Contrast

The four infrared modes produce the most aggressive tonal shifts in the editor:

• 720nm (False Color) remaps color channels based on infrared wavelength simulation. Greens turn white, skies go dark, skin tones shift toward orange. Landscapes look alien.
• Aerochrome emulates Kodak Aerochrome film. Green foliage turns bright magenta. The contrast between magenta vegetation and dark sky is extreme. Works on any outdoor photo with plants.
• Mono IR converts to grayscale using an infrared luminance mix. Foliage goes bright white, sky goes near-black. Higher contrast than standard B&W conversion because the luminance mapping is different.
• Golden maps everything through warm tones with high contrast. Like shooting through amber glass with pushed film.

Set infrared intensity to 60-100% and pair with the S-Curve or High Contrast setting. Infrared modes already push tonal range, so additional contrast compounds the effect.

Grain on High Contrast

High-contrast images look digital without grain. The tonal extremes need physical texture to feel real.

• Dark grain preset at 40-60% adds texture only to the shadows. The highlights and midtones stay clean. This is the most natural pairing with high-contrast looks.
• Particles at 20-30% scatters bright dust specks. On a high-contrast image, particles catch light in the dark areas. Looks like dust on a print.
• For infrared images, use the Image Analyser with heavy shadow grain and coarse highlight grain. Infrared creates unusual shadow/highlight distributions, so automatic zone detection places grain where it matters.

• Graphic noir: Crushed Shadows curve, Max contrast, B&W mode, Dark grain at 60%
• Hot editorial: S-Curve, High contrast, Temperature +30, Saturation +20, Film grain at 25%
• Infrared landscape: Aerochrome at 80%, S-Curve, High contrast, Image Analyser shadows 50%/highlights 30%
• Washed high-contrast: Bright Lift curve, Max contrast, Wash at 40%, Mono grain at 35%
