Flat footage reads as flat because nothing in it has direction. Relight puts a light back into the frame after the fact: a key with a real angle and colour, a rim to lift the edge, and a dial for how much of the footage own lighting to keep. It is the fastest way to make a flatly lit or generated clip read as something a person chose to light.
Light Angle moves the key around the frame and Elevation lifts it overhead. Colour Temp is where the mood lives: under 5600 warms the light toward tungsten and candle, over 5600 cools it toward shade and moonlight. Kill Original is the honest control. Raise it to override the footage existing lighting and take over, lower it to lay your light on top of what is already there.
The Warm key preset drops a warm light in from screen-left and takes over half the original lighting: a natural interior feel. The Cool moonlight rim preset comes from behind, cool and low on ambient, so the subject gets a cold edge against the dark. Both are starting points. Nudge the angle and temperature until it sits.
Set Drive to pulse or audio and the key light pumps with the kick, which turns a static grade into something that performs with the track. Relight sits well before a grade: try it under Subject Grade to light and then separate the subject, or pair it with Cinematic LUT for a finished look. One caution: on footage that is already well lit, a second light can fight the original, so reach for it most on flat or generated clips. Open it here: Relight.
