The Chase & Status Look: Stutter + Slit Scan + LUT + Point Cloud
Recent Chase & Status clips and DnB visual projects share a visual language: stuttered freeze-frames, horizontal time-stretching, cold desaturated grades, and particle breakdowns that dissolve the image. This four-effect combo gets you there.
The Idea
Each effect handles one layer of the look:
- Stutter, breaks timing. Captures video segments and replays them in rapid loops, creating freeze-stutter-release hits that lock to drops and transitions.
- Slit Scan, breaks space. Every pixel row comes from a different moment in time. Movement stretches and warps across the frame like a temporal rift.
- Cinematic LUT, sets the grade. Unifies the output of both effects under one coherent palette.
- Point Cloud, breaks matter. Decomposes the image into particles floating in 3D. For breakdowns and atmospheric passages.
Stack Order
Stack in this order (first = processed first):
- Stutter
- Slit Scan
- Cinematic LUT
Point Cloud works better on its own or with just the LUT, stacking it with Stutter and Slit Scan overloads the image. Use it on separate timeline segments.
Stutter, the Hits
Stutter captures a video segment and replays it in a fast loop before resuming normal playback.
- Capture Length: 15–20 frames, short segments keep the loops tight and percussive
- Stutter Count: 3–4, repetitions before resuming. 3 gives a triplet rhythm, 4 locks to 4/4 time.
- Speed: 2.5–3.0, fast loop playback. Higher = more nervous and mechanical.
On performance footage (live, dance, concert), stutter catches gestures and impacts. Match the capture length to the strong beats of your music.
Slit Scan, the Time Warp
Slit Scan reads each row or column of pixels from a different moment in the temporal buffer. The result stretches movement across the image.
- Direction: horizontal, horizontal bands drift with the movement, producing the lateral stretching typical of DnB visuals
- Time Depth: 6–10, buffer depth. 6 for short reactive distortions, 10 for longer stretches that linger.
- Exposure: 2–3, temporal layers combined. Higher = more ghosting in the scan.
- Speed: 1.5–2.0, sweep speed. Fast for aggressive visuals.
- Slit Width: 2–4, reading slit width. Wider = thicker, more readable bands.
Slit Scan after Stutter turns the frozen loops into horizontal smears. Freeze-frames become streaks sliding across the frame.
Cinematic LUT, the Grade
The LUT pulls everything under one palette.
- LUT: bleachBypass, desaturates and pushes contrast. Closest to recent C&S clips. Skin tones go grey, highlights burn, shadows are dense.
- Intensity: 0.85, almost full, with just enough residual colour to avoid pure B&W
- Grain: 0.08, subtle film texture
Alternatives: moonlight for a cold blue night look, cyberpunk for harder green/magenta tones, filmNoir for punchy B&W.
Point Cloud, the Dissolve
For breakdowns, intros, or transitions, swap the Stutter+SlitScan stack for Point Cloud alone (with the LUT).
- Density: 4–6, dense enough to read shapes, sparse enough to see space between particles
- Point Size: 2.5, visible points without becoming blocks
- Depth: 1.0–1.5, pronounced depth, close particles large, distant ones small
- Color: mono, desaturates particles, reinforces the cold feel
- 3D Orbit: ON, camera slowly rotates around the point cloud
- Orbit Speed: 0.3, slow cinematic rotation
- FOV: 250–350, wide field, particles spread in perspective
- BG Brightness: 0, full black background
Point Cloud + Cinematic LUT (moonlight, intensity 0.7) gives blue particle silhouettes on black. Alternate it with the Stutter+SlitScan stack to vary textures across your edit.
Full Recipes
- Aggressive drop: Stutter (capture 15, count 4, speed 3.0) → Slit Scan (horizontal, depth 6, speed 2.0, width 2) → LUT (bleachBypass, 0.9, grain 0.1)
- Tense build-up: Stutter (capture 30, count 6, speed 1.5) → Slit Scan (vertical, depth 12, speed 0.8, width 4) → LUT (moonlight, 0.8, grain 0.05)
- Atmospheric break: Point Cloud (density 5, mono, 3D orbit ON, speed 0.3, FOV 300) → LUT (moonlight, 0.7, grain 0.08)
- End transition: Point Cloud (density 3, depth 2.0, orbit speed 0.8, FOV 200) → LUT (filmNoir, 1.0, grain 0.12)
Open Stutter, Slit Scan, Cinematic LUT and Point Cloud, load a performance or dance clip, and dial in the settings in real time.
