Databend: Make the Music Paint the Picture

Databending is the trick of letting a file pretend it is something it is not. Open a JPEG in an audio editor and it buzzes like a modem. Read an MP3 as image data and you get a stripe of noise that breathes when the song moves. The file is fine; you just handed bytes meant for your ears to your eyes.

The Databend tool runs that swap on purpose. Drop a song in and the track paints the canvas. Drop a clip in too and the audio distorts it instead. What you see is the music, byte for byte.

Generative Mode, Audio Alone

With only audio loaded, Databend runs in Generative mode. The track paints a small internal canvas that scales up to your export size.

Drops show up as visible colour shifts. Percussive hits read as bands of pixels changing together. Steady drones land flat: no variance in the track, no variance in the picture.

Internal Resolution at the low end gives you the cleanest compressed-signal pixel-art read. Push it up and it slides toward static. Most tracks sit best in the middle.

Modulate Mode, Audio Bends Video

Drop a clip on top of the audio and Databend flips to Modulate. The track now corrupts the clip instead of painting alone. Four operations.

XOR

The most violent of the four. Around 0.6–0.8 intensity, any clip turns into hard glitch. Drop to 0.2 for subtle texture that still pulses with the song.

Add

Pumps colour without flipping it. Reads as warm distortion rather than chaos. Sits between XOR and Pump.

Brightness Pump

Quiet sections dim, drops blow out. Smoother than XOR. With bands on, low, mid and high frequencies each pump independently. The safe option for clips.

Channel Shift

Pulls the colour channels apart on the music. In bands mode, bass shifts red, mids shift green, treble shifts blue. The mismatched directions are what give you chromatic separation locked to the track. Bass-heavy mixes throw the loudest reds.

Controls That Punch Above Their Weight

Why It Reads Different from a Visualizer

An audio visualizer reads the music and draws shapes that move to it. The picture is generated from a representation of the audio.

Databend does not generate anything. It paints with the song itself. The file is the picture. Same song, same image, every render.

Workflow

  1. Drop in an audio file (MP3, WAV, OGG, AAC, FLAC). The tool flips to Generative, paints immediately.
  2. To corrupt footage, drop a clip on top. The tool flips to Modulate.
  3. Pick an operation. XOR for chaos, Add for warm pump, Pump for clean response, Shift for RGB earthquake.
  4. Tune intensity. Most tracks sit between 0.2 and 0.7.
  5. Export MP4. The original audio rides through, locked to the visuals you previewed.

Stack It

Databend reads as a loud audio-locked layer. Pair with quieter looks underneath.

Where It Came From

The audio-as-image swap goes back to the early-2000s glitch scene. Artists handed JPEGs to Audacity, ran filters, saved them back. Some files survived. Most did not. The ones that did had patterns: pitch-shift gave horizontal smears, bandpass gave band stripes. The look became its own genre. Databend skips the round-trip risk: the swap happens in memory, never to your file.

Try It

Open Databend, drop a song in, watch it paint. Add a clip whenever you want the music to drive footage instead.
