Depth Mosh: The Datamosh That Keeps the Subject

Classic Datamosh melts the whole frame. That is the look, and it is a good one, but it treats the person and the wall behind them as the same thing. Depth Mosh is the version that knows the difference. It rots and liquefies the background while the subject in front of it stays razor sharp, so you get the decay without losing the face. This is the one to reach for when a full datamosh eats the part of the shot you actually care about.

Start from a preset

Three presets set the whole mood. Ghost rots the background and holds the subject sharp, the signature look. Dissolve flips it: the subject melts while the world holds still. Rot pushes everything behind the subject into full liquefaction. Pick the one closest to what you want, then shape it.

The controls that shape it

Freeze length is the one that matters most. A long freeze gives the background time to visibly liquefy. A short one just reads as a compression fault, so lean long when you want real melt. Edge feather keeps the subject cutout hard, which is what sells the split. Slice invert swaps which side melts, and Intensity sets how hard the whole thing rots. There is no mask to draw: the tool finds the subject for you.

When it works, and when it does not

Depth Mosh wants a clear subject in front of a background: a performer, a face, a body. Give it that and the split is clean. On a flat scene with no clear subject there is nothing to hold onto, so the effect has nothing to protect and you may as well use the full Datamosh. For the melt between two clips, reach for Datamosh Transition instead, and for pure luminance streaks try Pixel Sort. Open it and rot a background: Depth Mosh.
